Conveyance Into Light: Sculptural Performance
Phoenix Office of Arts & Culture Presents A Temporary & Performing Arts Series at Burton Barr Central Library
Conveyance Into Light is a short, visual exploration of the grieving process and the cyclical nature of renewing life energy. This concept is presented through the visual interpretation of a whale, symbolic of an angel descending from the heavens to gather the souls of the deceased and return them to the stars. The souls appear as birds in the artwork. The aspect of reassurance in death, through whatever demise meets a soul, results in this calming transition. A film presentation with live musical performance by Mario Yniguez and Tony Obr, showcasing theatrical puppetry and visual effects, brings this story to life.
This video presentation and live performance will be approximately 20 minutes in length and begin at 2pm and 3pm.
About the Artists:
Katharine Leigh Simpson is a fine arts and installation artist. She creates both two-dimensional and textural works as well as performance pieces to express energy, wave forms, and life’s impermanence. Combining organic materials found in nature together with paper and other traditional fine art mediums, Katharine captures this energy and translate it into sculptural expressions. The dualistic qualities of strength and fragility in the materials themselves echo impermanence, while at the same time, allude to their transformative properties.
