LGBTQ Virtual Film Discussion Online

LGBTQ Virtual Film Discussion Online Online

Are movies your thing? Looking for a conversation about LGBTQ topics?

Join us for the LGBTQ monthly film discussion series! Each month we will discuss an LGBTQ film through the library's Kanopy collection. It's all about watching films, sharing stories, and having an honest conversation about the tough issues faced by the LGBTQ community.

This month we are watching:

Beyond the Straight and Narrow: Queer and Trans Television in the Age of Streaming

How did the rise of LGBTQ visibility, political progress, and digital technologies in the 2000s come together to offer the abundance of complex queer and transgender representations we see today? The streaming services Netflix and Amazon Prime attracted audiences’ attention with nuanced and intersectional queer and trans narratives when they debuted the original series "Orange is the New Black" and "Transparent".  Legacy channels had to develop more complex and sustained LGBTQ storylines to compete.  And when viewers don’t see images that represent them in the media mainstream, a rich array of independent web series offers authentic, community-sustaining narratives.  As distribution channels are moving from niche to mass audiences once again, we cannot take for granted that distinctive LGBTQ characters and plotlines will be a taken-for-granted staple of our television universe.  Long-fought cultural struggles persist over who gets to exist in our national imagination.

This series allows us to explore complex topics. Due to adult content and mature themes, viewer and participant discretion is advised.

The program will be presented online using Webex. Registration is required. Registered participants will receive an email with instructions on how to join the meeting. Don't see the email? Check your spam folder.

The Phoenix LGBTQ Employee Alliance has partnered with Burton Barr Central Library to produce a program featuring a series of award-winning films that showcases the experiences of the LGBTQ community. The series highlights the artistic contributions both nationally and internationally of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender films and filmmakers. Our goal is to create a diverse film series that educates, entertains, and offers the viewer an opportunity to experience the challenges and triumphs firsthand.
