What Were You Wearing?
The “What Were You Wearing?” art installation challenges victim blaming and one of the most common questions survivors of sexual assault hear when they tell their stories. This exhibit features the narratives of sexual assault survivors and a recreation of what they were wearing when they were assaulted.
Come view the exhibit located on the 2nd floor of Burton Barr Central Library from April 9th – April 24th as part of the “Let’s Talk Teal” initiative.
In 2019, the City of Phoenix launched a Sexual Violence Awareness campaign called "Let's Talk Teal". In addition to activities that directly impact survivors of sexual violence, the initiative emphasizes having important conversations to prevent and end sexual violence.
The City of Phoenix's partnership with the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence and the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative administered by the Bureau of Justice Assistance seeks to raise public awareness about Sexual Violence and to educate communities on how to prevent it. As part of the partnership, the City of Phoenix holds monthly workgroup meetings focusing on four key areas:
Teens and Youth: focusing on prevention and youth issues.
Education: focusing on building community capacity to appropriately respond to survivors of sexual assault.
Advocacy: focusing on identifying service gaps and improving service provision for survivors of sexual violence.
Leadership: focusing on making Phoenix a national model and planning for Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April.
