Rare Book Room Presents: Holinshed, Milton, and Shakespeare

Rare Book Room Presents: Holinshed, Milton, and Shakespeare

Join us as we celebrate Phoenix Public Library’s exciting news on the recent historic discovery: Our copy of the 1587 edition of Holinshed's Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland once belonged to John Milton!

Originally published in 1577, Raphael Holinshed's Chronicles is a thorough account of the history of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and recognized as a key reference for Shakespeare and his writings. John Milton (1608-1674), widely considered the most significant English poet after Shakespeare, author of the epic poem Paradise Lost, first appeared in print in Shakespeare’s Second Folio. Click here to learn more about this discovery.

Holinshed's Chronicles will be on exhibit outside the Rare Book Room, alongside other literary treasures from the 16th and 17th century, including Paradise Lost and works by Shakespeare! Visit the exhibit on the 4th floor of Burton Barr Central Library through August 3rd.
