Milton in the Margins

Milton in the Margins

In spring of this year a wonderful and historic discovery was made—Phoenix Public Library’s copy of the 1587 edition of Holinshed's Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland once belonged to John Milton! Milton (1608-1674) is widely considered the most significant English poet after Shakespeare; he authored the epic poem Paradise Lost, and first appeared in print in Shakespeare’s Second Folio. Click here to read about the discovery on our website.

This talk will feature Dr. Claire M.L. Bourne (Penn State) and Dr. Aaron T. Pratt (Harry Ransom Center, UT-Austin) who were two of the three researchers to confirm Milton’s handwriting in the book, along with Dr. Brandi K. Adams (ASU) and Dr. Jonathan Hope (ASU), founders of the Arizona Book History Group and organizers for the research trip to Phoenix that led to the book discovery.

Join us to learn how this book made its way to Phoenix, how we know it belonged to John Milton, and why this discovery is so significant.
