LGBTQ Virtual Film Discussion

LGBTQ Virtual Film Discussion Online

Are movies your thing? Looking for a conversation about LGBTQ topics?

Join us for the LGBTQ monthly film discussion series! Each month we will discuss an LGBTQ film through the library's Kanopy collection. It's all about watching films, sharing stories, and having an honest conversation about the tough issues faced by the LGBTQ community.

This month we are watching:

El Canto del Colibri: Latino Immigrant Men and Their LGBTQ Family Members

KANOPY LINK: https://www.kanopy.com/en/phoenixpl/video/199635

“El Canto del Colibrí,” is a story of Latino fathers dealing with issues of immigration, faith, marriage equality, machismo, culture, and the process of their LGBTQ children coming out. Responding to requests from “Tres Gotas de Agua” audiences around the world, the filmmakers are taking this journey by inviting Latino men to speak frankly about delicate and deeply personal topics. This film will address political issues about LGBTQ families, social oppression, shared responsibility and acceptance of LGBTQ people as members of Latino families.

The filmmakers will bring you real stories, Latino immigrant fathers’ stories, with interviews and interactions with family members, and their everyday lives in their communities as a background. Using spectacular cinematography of our colorful Latino communities around the country, the filmmakers intend to expose different points of view and help spur the development of powerful dialogue in our communities. This film seeks to fight isolation and build bridges of hope and solidarity among our Latino fathers, their families and community activists.

This series allows us to explore complex topics. Due to adult content and mature themes, viewer and participant discretion is advised.

The program will be presented online using Webex. Registration is required. Registered participants will receive an email with instructions on how to join the meeting. Don't see the email? Check your spam folder.

The Phoenix LGBTQ Employee Alliance has partnered with Burton Barr Central Library to produce a program featuring a series of award-winning films that showcases the experiences of the LGBTQ community. The series highlights the artistic contributions both nationally and internationally of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender films and filmmakers. Our goal is to create a diverse film series that educates, entertains, and offers the viewer an opportunity to experience the challenges and triumphs firsthand.
