The Cousins Roosevelt and America's Best Idea

The US National Park system is a huge point of national pride and envied throughout the world. Its history and development is an interesting story that was influenced by the work of two US presidents from different eras and political parties, who happened to be cousins and who saw the potential treasure that the parks could offer. This program takes you through the history of the parks and highlights some of the outstanding contributions made by the Cousins Roosevelt.

Presenter Bio

Stephen A. Engelhardt is a career interpreter, storyteller, and lifelong ambassador for America’s National Parks. Raised in a park community and seasoned across icons like Denali, Acadia, Sequoia & Kings Canyon, North Cascades, and Organ Pipe Cactus, Stephen has spent years turning science, history, and wildlife into experiences people remember. A former lead interpreter and operations supervisor, he’s delivered everything from amphitheater talks and ranger chats to three-hour bus tours and guided hikes—often using clever props, irresistible hooks, and a dash of humor. 

Equally comfortable mentoring new rangers or captivating a crowd, Stephen is Eppley-certified at the advanced level and has trained interpreters nationwide. Before the uniform, he built a successful executive career in sales and public relations, sharpening the communication skills he now brings back to the parks. Known for warmth, authority, and storytelling flair, Stephen doesn’t just interpret parks—he makes people fall in love with them.
