Effective February 28, 2022, City of Phoenix lifted the face mask requirement for those visiting and/or attending programs within City of Phoenix facilities and Phoenix Public Library locations. City of Phoenix follows CDC Guidelines for reducing COVID risk. Should the risk level in Maricopa County increase to a high category, masking requirements will be reinstated. Attendance at in-person programs continues to be reduced to accommodate physical distancing. Thank you for understanding.

LGBTQ Virtual Film Discussion

LGBTQ Virtual Film Discussion Online

Are movies your thing? Looking for a conversation about LGBTQ topics?

Join us for the LGBTQ monthly film discussion series! Each month we will discuss an LGBTQ film through the library's Kanopy collection. It's all about watching films, sharing stories, and having an honest conversation about the tough issues faced by the LGBTQ community.

This month we are watching:

Chely Wright: Wish Me Away

98 minutes, 2011

https://phoenixpl.kanopy.com/video/chely-wright-wish-me-away

Chely Wright: Wish Me Away is the story of Chely Wright, the first Nashville music star to come out as gay.  Over three years, the filmmakers were given extraordinary access to Chely's struggle and her unfolding plan to come out publicly. Using interviews with Chely, her family, her pastor, and key players in the music world, alongside Chely's intimate private video diaries, the film goes deep into her back story as an established star and then forward as she steps into the national spotlight to reveal her secret.  Chronicling the aftermath in Nashville and within the LGBT community, the film reveals both the devastation of homophobia and the transformational power of living an authentic life.

This series allows us to explore complex topics. Due to adult content and mature themes, viewer and participant discretion is advised.

The program will be presented online using Webex. Registration is required. Registered participants will receive an email with instructions on how to join the meeting. Don't see the email? Check your spam folder.

The Phoenix LGBTQ Employee Alliance has partnered with Burton Barr Central Library to produce a program featuring a series of award-winning films that showcases the experiences of the LGBTQ community. The series highlights the artistic contributions both nationally and internationally of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender films and filmmakers. Our goal is to create a diverse film series that educates, entertains, and offers the viewer an opportunity to experience the challenges and triumphs firsthand.
