DESCRIPTION:Are movies your thing? Looking for a conversation about LGBTQ 
 topics?\n\nJoin us for the LGBTQ monthly film discussion series! Each month 
 we will discuss an LGBTQ film through the library's Kanopy collection. It's 
 all about watching films\, sharing stories\, and having an honest 
 conversation about the tough issues faced by the LGBTQ community.\n\nThis 
 month we are watching:\n\nGlobal Homophobia: The Roots of Hatred\n\nKANOPY

 hard-hitting documentary reveals the abuse suffered by the gay community 
 all over the world. France\, despite having legalized gay marriage in 
 2013\, has seen a rise in homophobic violence in recent years. \n\nIn 
 Tunisia\, gay people can be sentenced to three years in prison\, simply for 
 their sexual orientation. When arrested by the police\, they are subject to 
 an “anal examination”\, a humiliating procedure of no scientific value. 
 Uganda is one of the 27 sub-Saharan countries in which homosexuality is 
 repressed\, with active state-encouragement of homophobia\, and where 
 homosexuality is punishable by lifetime imprisonment. \n\nIn the United 
 States\, more progressive laws have not translated into progressive 
 attitudes. 700\,000 Americans\, in a desperate attempt to change their 
 sexual orientation\, have gone to see therapists who claim to be able to 
 “transform any homosexual into a heterosexual”..\n\n \n\nThis series 
 allows us to explore complex topics. Due to adult content and mature 
 themes\, viewer and participant discretion is advised.\n\nThe program will

 \n\nThe Phoenix LGBTQ Employee Alliance has partnered with Burton Barr 
 Central Library to produce a program featuring a series of award-winning 
 films that showcases the experiences of the LGBTQ community. The series 
 highlights the artistic contributions both nationally and internationally 
 of lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, and transgender films and filmmakers. Our 
 goal is to create a diverse film series that educates\, entertains\, and 
 offers the viewer an opportunity to experience the challenges and triumphs 
 firsthand.
