So, You Want to Start a Nonprofit - Part Three: Applying for Tax-Exempt Status

So, You Want to Start a Nonprofit - Part Three: Applying for Tax-Exempt Status

So, You Want to Start a Nonprofit is a four-part series aimed at those interested in establishing a nonprofit organization. Participants will explore the various types of tax exemptions available, including 501(c)(3) and other categories, and learn the detailed steps required to establish a nonprofit organization – from drafting a mission statement and assembling a board to filing the necessary legal paperwork. Additionally, this series covers crucial regulations that nonprofits must adhere to in order to maintain their tax-exempt status. This series is ideal for aspiring social entrepreneurs and community leaders looking to start a nonprofit or learn more about the rules governing nonprofits.

Part Three: Applying for Tax-Exempt Status

Having a nonprofit corporation is not the same as being tax-exempt. To obtain 501(c) or 501(c)(3) status, newly formed entities must apply to the IRS for a formal determination of exemption. The attitude of the IRS is that requiring applicants to articulate detailed plans is a small price to pay for the significant tax benefits associated with 501(c)(3) status. In this workshop, participants will learn:

  • The importance of the narrative statement.
  •  Why language matters.
  • Ancillary documents often requested by the IRS.
  • Timing.
  • The expedited process.
  • Leveraging interim fundraising.
  • User fees.

This workshop is presented by Ellis Carter and Ashley Spear of Caritas Law Group, PC.
